Countless NBA players have experienced this feeling.
Countless NBA players have experienced this feeling. But not a single WNBA player had until recently. When NBA 2K20 premiered in 2019, it had been the very first time the annual match -- which thrived in 1999 -- showcased WNBA players. Her predecessors did not get the chance to NBA 2K Coins play as themselves, but Washington Mystics wing Aerial Powers couldn't help but make a comparison when she played herself. "This is probably how the men feel when they get in the league and they get a chance to play themselves 2K," she said. "It's just surreal and is pretty fun."
"I'd have never believed they would implement girls to the match," Powers told USA TODAY Sports. "Even though I feel as though we should be in there." Dallas Wings guard Allisha Gray was playing 2K because Shaquille O'Neal graced the cover at 2005, and she still has trouble believing that she is a part of it. Alexis Jones, who had been waived by the Atlanta Fantasy in August, has always enjoyed making her very own player on 2K and tends to mold his match after her own. This will be the first year she will not have to make herself at the picture of a man.
"That has been my fantasy come true, I don't know about everybody else," Jones stated. "I know that is one thing that I always dreamed of as a little girl -- to maintain a 2K match. This chance to make yourself and build yourself and be a woman is dope." The importance of building your own WNBA player can not be overstated, especially for young girls who aspire to play basketball or are just fans of the game. "I think it's astonishing that little girls can develop and actually play the game and understand that they can still have the very same goals and accomplishments as guys," Jones said. Powers echoed the sentiment and how significant representation is for young women. She also wants to see more progression with women in the video game business in general.
Powers streams and plays video games on Twitch and is now especially active in gaming because the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. She even hosted an all-female 2K tournament in October that included a 30-minute opening musical group by Grammy Award winning performer DJ Jazzy Jeff. The stream garnered over 26,000 viewers. The 2019 WNBA winner says when she plays video games online she is sometimes met with misogynistic messages from different consumers, and she hopes that new modes like"The W" will make it easier for girls playing video games. "It kind of gives the younger women a fantastic look and says,'Hey, it is alright to be a female, like basketball and wish to Cheap 2K21 MT play,' since I know some of their male buddies may have a different opinion," Powers said. "But if you see the girls from the game, it is like,'Hey, this is right.'"
